Roughly 13,000 people call this town home year-round, but those numbers increase tremendously during the summer months when cruise ships land daily and commercial fishing boats descend on the area. Ketchikan has its roots in the fishing and logging industries, and while the focus has shifted heavily towards tourism, visitors can still experience the frontier feel of this historical town.
Situated on Revillagigedo Island, Ketchikan is 90 air miles from Seattle and close to the capitol city of Juneau. This is rainforest country and Ketchikan has the dubious honor of the heaviest average rainfall in North America. However, average temperatures are usually mild (33 to 60 degrees F) despite the wet weather.
A popular port of call, there are many activities and shore excursions offered, as well as accommodations, restaurants and shopping. Visitors can explore nearby Misty Fjords via floatplane or on an afternoon cruise. Sportfishing and hiking opportunities abound, as well as city tours and museums. Tourists always enjoy a visit to Ketchikan’s Creek Street, once the site of the houses of “ill-repute” and speakeasies back in the Gold Rush days. The Tongass Historical Museum showcases the history of the area and has exhibits of native tools and artwork. The Totem Heritage Center also provides an overview of native history, with its rare collection of totems, some over a century old. Shopping is endless at the lovely Spruce Mill Development, modeled after 1920’s style cannery architecture and home to a mix of shops, galleries and restaurants.
For those visitors wanting to spend some time here, Ketchikan has over 400 guest rooms available, with choices ranging from top-notch hotels to quiet lodges or bed and breakfasts. Transportation options include shuttle services, car rentals and ferries.
