Set between high mountain ranges and glorious Resurrection Bay, the picturesque town of Seward is one of Alaska’s oldest communities. Fishing and tourism are the top industries in this town of roughly 3,000 people and cruise ships have become a big part of the tourist trade.
Seward has retained much of its small-town feel, evident in the cozy local shops in the downtown area and quaint restaurants. Shore excursions here include tours of Exit Glacier, located just 13 miles outside town, as well as day cruises of the bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. The cruise ship dock is just half a mile from downtown and the Seward’s Trolley stops at the dock every 30 minutes, taking travelers to various points of interest. There is a Chamber of Commerce visitor information center, manned when ships are in port, right on the dock. The Kenai Fjords National Park visitor center is also within walking distance of the cruise docks and provides information on tours and other adventures. For those wishing to enjoy outdoor activities, Seward’s Mt. Marathon is just outside the downtown area and offers a daring hike for those brave enough to try it. Mt. Marathon is also the site of Seward’s famous 4th of July race, held yearly and swelling this tiny population to over 30,000 people for the one day event.
Downtown visitors should take a trip to the Alaska SeaLife Center, where a research facility combines with an educational experience for the general public. Enjoy viewing marine wildlife through the huge cold-water tanks and via the outdoor viewing platforms. The Seward Museum is also another great stopping point in downtown Seward, with exhibits on the 1964 earthquake (which created a tsunami that devastated the town), the Iditarod trail and Native history.
Weather here, like most coastal towns, can be unpredictable. Expect cool temperatures and rainy days, with the occasional sunny afternoon mixed in. There are several hotels to choose from, as well as many bed and breakfasts both in town and out. There are quite a few restaurants downtown, most within walking distance from each other and offering everything from fine dining to Chinese take-out.
