The Volendam was introduced by Holland America in 1999. With a capacity for 1,440, this ship’s claim to fame was being the first of the fleet to introduce an internet access center. This modern attitude remains today and is showcased throughout, providing a luxurious setting with contemporary flair. The design theme for the ship is “floral” and flower arrangements as well as floral tapestries and fabrics can be found everywhere onboard. Clean lines and soft colors decorate the cabins, with cabin sizes ranging from just under 200 square feet to a glamorous penthouse that boasts over 1,100 square feet.

Entertainment choices include a visit to the two-tiered Frans Hals Lounge, which has live music and a variety of performances, movies in the Wajang Theater or a night of dancing at the Ocean Bar. The crew also puts on an enjoyable show that gives presentations of their native countries. Workout opportunities are readily available, with a fitness center, aerobics and yoga classes, two swimming pools and a track. Those wanting to relax and rejuvenate can spend some time at the spa, getting facials, massage or taking a sauna.

For dining, the two-story Rotterdam Dining Room has open seating for breakfast and lunch and the standard early or late choice in assigned dinner times. The Pinnacle Grill is the ship’s reservations-only restaurant, providing excellent, upscale cuisine. The more casual option is the Lido Restaurant with its cafeteria-style set up and varied menu choices. The cruise line is currently implementing its new “As You Wish” flexible dining program, which should be functioning onboard the Volendam in fall of 2007.
